Gynecological Services Q & A

How often should I see my gynecologist for routine exams?

Adolescent girls should start seeing a gynecologist when they get their period, usually between the ages of 13-15, and periodically thereafter. Women who are sexually active, have a family history of reproductive diseases, or are entering menopause may need more appointments.

For most healthy women, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) recommends you see your gynecologist for screenings at the following intervals:

  • Periodic pelvic exams starting at 21
  • Breast exams every 1-3 years from 25-39 and every year after 40
  • Pap smear and HPV test timing vary depending upon risk factors.  Exams should be done annually for evaluation of risk factors and need for testing

Dr. Kollar and her nurse practitioner, Magen, also check other medical criteria at well-woman exams, screening for sexually transmitted infections, neck and abdominal exams, glucose screenings, depression risk assessments, and bone mineral density values. They provide guidance for sexual health, weight management, mental health, and more.

Many women assume these exams and screenings can replace your annual physical, but they aren’t a substitute for regular checkups with your primary care provider. Dr. Kollar recommends you still see your primary care provider, but you can always bring up your health concerns with her.

When should I see my gynecologist for problems?

Any time you notice pain, abnormalities, or like something seems “off,” you should notify your gynecologist. You should make an appointment with Dr. Kollar or Magen right away if you notice:

  • Heavy or missed periods
  • Abnormal menstrual patterns
  • Pelvic pain or fullness
  • Abnormal, foul-smelling discharge
  • Urinary issues
  • Sexual dysfunction
  • Vaginal dryness or laxity
  • Mood changes, depression, and cramps before periods
  • Vasomotor symptoms
  • Vulvar disease
  • Breast changes

You should bring up these symptoms even if they seem minor, too private, or embarrassing. Dr. Kollar handles these kinds of concerns regularly with nonjudgmental compassion and sensitivity.
