MonaLIsa Touch Q & A

What is vaginal atrophy?

Vaginal atrophy is a medical term that describes the thinning, dryness, and loss of elasticity inside the vagina that usually occurs after menopause. Vaginal atrophy is attributed to a decline in estrogen levels, which can also happen after removal of the ovaries or cancer treatments.

The symptoms of vaginal atrophy can make you uncomfortable, particularly during sex, and put you at a higher risk for urinary tract infections. You can talk to the providers at Premier Women’s Health about MonaLisa Touch to reclaim your vaginal health.

What is the MonaLisa Touch?

MonaLisa Touch is a gynecologic procedure using lasers to stimulate the body’s natural healing response. This healing response inside the vaginal canal results in:

  • Improved blood flow
  • Stimulated tissue regeneration
  • Increased lubrication
  • Restored pH levels

You also may notice tighter, more hydrated conditions in your vagina that make sex more pleasurable.

What happens during the MonaLisa Touch procedure?

After preparing you for treatment, Dr. Kollar has you undress from the waist down and lie down on an exam table with your feet in stirrups like you would during a pelvic exam.

Then, Dr. Kollar inserts a thin laser probe into your vagina. She maneuvers the probe to direct the lasers at the tissues inside your vagina and the vaginal opening, treating it in sections. When the procedure is over, Dr. Kollar removes the probe, has you dress, and gives you further care instructions.

The in-office procedure is easy to tolerate and only takes around five minutes. When you’re done, you can return to your activities straight from the office. Three total treatments are repeated six weeks apart. As the tissues continue to age and are affected by atrophy over time, some women continue with annual “touch up” treatments.

What are the benefits of the MonaLisa Touch?

The MonaLisa Touch is a safe and effective way to improve your vaginal health without introducing hormones or other materials to your body. Laser treatment can be a longer lasting alternative to topical creams and lubricants.

The non-invasive procedure also carries minimal side effects and requires no downtime. You may need to avoid sex for 2-3 days, but other than that, you don’t have to make any other adjustments to your lifestyle.
